UK Prime Minister Meets Ukrainian President in London
The talks are set to take place at Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon. Burnham is expected to outline how his government plans to develop further sanctions against Moscow, while reaffirming Britain’s commitment to Ukraine.
The visit marks Zelenskyy’s second trip to the UK since Burnham assumed the premiership. Ahead of the meeting, the British leader said the Ukrainian president “won’t be going away from Britain today empty-handed.”
The diplomatic discussions follow US President Donald Trump’s statement on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire.” Meanwhile, Washington has faced criticism over plans to import diesel from Russia.
Speaking to lawmakers in the House of Commons earlier Wednesday, Burnham said, “I’m looking very much now at my meeting with President Zelensky in a couple of hours,” as he looked ahead to the discussions.
Reflecting on a phone conversation with Zelenskyy on Saturday, the British prime minister described the Ukrainian leader’s circumstances as “another very dark and difficult moment for him,” particularly as Ukraine prepares for a harsh winter.
He added: “I recognize that he is carrying the heaviest of weights right now, and it is extremely difficult for him.”
Burnham also emphasized Britain’s continued support for Kyiv, stating: “I will listen to President Zelensky carefully, but he won’t be going away from Britain today empty-handed.”
Zelenskyy said upon arriving in the UK that his schedule included an audience with King Charles III and an “important meeting” with Burnham.
“We will discuss a wide range of security issues. We are preparing decisions that will strengthen us,” he wrote on X, highlighting the security focus of the visit.
